Zinc electroplating

Surface coating process where the workpiece through an anode-cathode reaction in an acidic solution is coated with a thin layer of zinc.

The process

Before processing can begin the work should have been pre-treated to achieve a clean surface, common practice is by electrolytic cleaning followed by pickling and rinsing.

The workpiece acts as a cathode and the surface coating agent as an anode and it’s immersed in the solution, generally consisting of cyanide, alkaline non-cyanide, or a salt solution with the acid chloride. An anode-cathode reaction occurs when the power is applied, which dissolves the zinc in the anode then migrate through the liquid to the cathode, and thus creates a thin layer of zinc on the surface of the workpiece.
