Laser Hybrid Welding

Joining process created by the continuous supply of a metal electrode. This is melted by an electric arc and a laser beam, both protected by an inert gas.

The process

The process is an automated combination of laser and MIG welding.

A spool [1] feeds a metal wire constantly, which also acts electrode. The workpiece and the electrode are connected to a power source, and this causes an electric arc. This creates high amount of heat energy, which leads to the electrode and parts of the workpiece to be melted and finally create the desired weld joint.

An inert gas, commonly with argon, is supplied to the welding area [2] with the aim of creating a protective atmosphere

Parallel to this process a laser beam [3] is focused in the same area as the electric arc, creating a deeper weld.
