The process

After a cup produced by deep-drawing (of sheet metal) or impact extrusion (of metal blank) this method can be used to make the cup walls thinner and higher.

The cup is fixed in a form-fitting punch and pressed by a die having a slightly smaller diameter than the outer diameter of the cup. This makes the cup walls undergo plastic deformation which increases wall height and makes the material thinner. The process can be repeated to further shape the cup to have even thinner edges and higher walls to create a cup of varying thickness and diameter.

This method can also be combined directly with deep drawing where the cup is pushed all the way through the deep drawing mold to pass through one or more forms of processing.

Deep drawing
The molding process where by means of pressure and tensile stress a sheet metal blank is changed into a curved body.
