Gas assist injection molding

Plastic forming process where a plastic melt is injected into a mold and where also a gas injected for pushing the melt towards the mold internal walls where the melt is solidified.

The process

Plastic pellets [1] are supplied via a hopper into a rotating screw [2] whose spiral shape moves the pellet forward through a heated chamber [3].The pellets are heated gradually and turns into a homogeneous plastic melt as it approaches the end of the helical screw.

The molten mass is pressed into a mold [4] as the entire screw is pushed forward by an applied pressing force.

A: After a portion of the volume is filled, we stop filling and a pressurized inert gas is supplied to [5].

B: The gas moves through the center of the melt and pushes it forward and out towards the walls.

C: Through the placement of the gas outlet position [6], one can to some extent control the cavity created inside the casting.

After the mass solidifies the mold halves are separated and the part is removed using ejector pins [7].

Advantages and disadvantages
In comparison with alternative methods
Improved productivity with shorter lead times, better quality, better design freedom
Reduced costs
Low density
Holes in the component at the entrance and the outlet for gas
Irregular non smooth inner walls
Gas can penetrate the wall of the unwanted parts
