The process

The tool is a toothless blade [1], which rotates around its horizontal axis.

Connection to power supply allows the blade to act as cathode and the workpiece as anode. When the electrode, that is, the blade, is brought close to the workpiece, intermittent spark discharges, which causes the workpiece to be melted and vaporized.

The discharge is supported by a dielectric fluid [2], which in combination with the rotation of the blade helps to cool the process and carry away the removed material while the blade is moved through the workpiece. Spark gap [3] causes the cut to be slightly wider than the blade width.

It is important that the electrode is electrically conductive and is normally made of metal or graphite.
